How it is used

The regular pattern, tested

Take the stem parl- and add o, i, a, iamo, ate, ano for the present. The imperfect is parlavo, parlavi, parlava; the historic past parlai, parlò, parlarono; the future parlerò, parlerai, parlerà; the conditional parlerei, parlerebbe; the subjunctive parli, parliamo, parlino. Every regular -are verb follows exactly these endings.

Parlare di, a, con, in

Parlo di lavoro (about something), parlo a Maria (to someone), parlo con Maria (with someone), parlo in italiano (in a language). Say a language directly with no preposition: parlo italiano. Add a pronoun to the infinitive and it attaches to the end: parlarne (talk about it); before a conjugated verb it moves ahead of it: ne parlo domani.

Where learners slip

The tu imperative drops the final vowel: parla! while the voi form keeps it: parlate! With avere the participle stays unchanged (ho parlato), and the topic is carried by ne: ne ho parlato (I talked about it). Parlare needs a preposition before an object: parlo di Marco, never *parlo Marco.

Questions learners ask

Is parlare regular?

Completely, in all seven tenses on this page. That is why textbooks conjugate it first: master parl- plus the endings and most Italian verbs follow the same route.

What does the ne in parlarne mean?

About it or about them. It sticks to the end of an infinitive (voglio parlarne) and sits before a conjugated verb (ne parliamo domani).

How do I say "I speak Italian"?

Parlo italiano, with no preposition. Use in when the language is the manner rather than the object: parlo in italiano, tradurre in italiano.

parlare a or parlare di?

Parlare di is to talk about something; parlare a is to speak to someone. Both can stack: parlo di Marco a Maria (I talk about Marco to Maria).
