Italian andare Conjugation

“to go” · 去 · all seven simple tenses plus the past participle

Present tenseio vado · tu vai · lui / lei va · noi andiamo · voi andate · loro vanno

Andare ("to go") is irregular in every tense that matters in speech, and its present splits across two stems: vado, vai, va, andiamo, andate, vanno. It also takes essere in the compound tenses, so the natural past is sono andato, never *ho andato.

Past participle Participio passato

masculine singular
andato
feminine singular
andata
masculine plural
andati
feminine plural
andate

Auxiliary: Andare takes essere: sono andato / andata, and the participle agrees with the subject.

How it is used

Two stems in one paradigm

The present uses v- in the singular and the third plural (vado, vai, va, vanno) but and- in the first and second plural (andiamo, andate). The imperfect, future and conditional stay on and- (andavo, andrò, andrei), the subjunctive prefers vada, and the historic past is andai, andò, andarono.

Andare a + infinitive: going to

Andare a plus an infinitive is the near future, built exactly like English going to: vado a dormire (I am going to sleep), va a piovere (it's going to rain). Prepositions follow the destination: vado a Roma, vado in Italia, vado al cinema, vado da Marco, vado a casa.

Where learners slip

There is no *vade: the third person is va. Vai is the second person singular and doubles as the imperative (vai!). Andare says where you go, partire says you set off: parto domani per Milano. Because the auxiliary is essere, the participle agrees: sono andata, siamo andati.

Questions learners ask

What is the past tense of andare?

Spoken Italian uses the compound sono andato. Use the imperfect andavo for background and past habits, and the historic andai only in narrative and writing.

Does andare take essere or avere?

Essere: sono andato, siamo andati, erano andati. The participle matches the subject in gender and number, so a woman says sono andata.

How do I say "I'm going to the doctor"?

Vado dal dottore, with da plus the person. Use in for countries and regions, a for cities and institutions: vado in Francia, vado a scuola.

Is there a future form of andare?

Yes, and it is everywhere: andrò, andrai, andrà. Andrà bene (it will be fine) is one of the first full sentences most learners hear.
