Past participle Participio passato

masculine singular
venuto
feminine singular
venuta
masculine plural
venuti
feminine plural
venute

Auxiliary: Venire takes essere: sono venuto / venuta, and the participle agrees with the subject.

How it is used

ven- and veng-, with a doubled r ahead

The present keeps vengo and vengono against veniamo and venite; the subjunctive follows the same split (che io venga, che loro vengano, but che noi veniamo). The future and conditional double the r: verrò, verrai, verrà, verrei, verrebbe. The historic past is venni, venne, vennero, and the participle is the regular venuto.

Venire as a passive

Il ponte viene riparato ogni anno (the bridge is repaired every year). Venire plus a participle is the alternative to essere plus a participle in the passive, and it stresses the action rather than the resulting state. Use it only in simple tenses and usually with an agent introduced by da; the compound past goes back to essere: è stato riparato.

Venire, arrivare, and things that come over you

Both take essere, and both agree: sono venuto, sono arrivato. Arrivare marks reaching a destination (il treno arriva alle otto), venire marks movement toward the speaker or the topic (vieni qui!). Add mi and venire describes what comes over you: mi viene fame (I get hungry), mi viene da ridere (I feel like laughing).

Questions learners ask

Does venire take essere or avere?

Essere: sono venuto, siamo venuti. Because the auxiliary is essere, the participle agrees with the subject in gender and number: sono venuta.

What does mi viene da ridere mean?

I feel like laughing — venire plus da plus an infinitive describes an urge coming over you. The same frame gives mi viene da piangere.

What is the future stem of venire?

verr-, with a doubled r: verrò, verrai, verrà. The conditional keeps the doubling: verrei, verresti, verrebbe.

Can venire really replace essere in the passive?

In simple tenses yes, and mainly when an agent follows with da: viene invitato ogni anno. For compound tenses Italian keeps essere: è stato invitato.
