Past participle Participio passato

masculine singular
uscito
feminine singular
uscita
masculine plural
usciti
feminine plural
uscite

Auxiliary: Uscire takes essere: sono uscito / uscita, and the participle agrees with the subject.

How it is used

No -isc- in sight

The sc belongs to the stem, not to an infix: esce, escono, che io esca, and the historic past uscii, uscì, uscirono. Compare capire, which does take the infix: capisco, capisci, capisce. Partire, seguire and dormire sit with uscire in the no-infix group, while preferire takes it: preferisco.

Uscire di, da, con

Esco di casa alle sette (I leave home at seven), esco dall'ufficio / da Marco (out of a place or away from someone's place), and esce con Marco (he is going out with Marco, the dating sense). Uscire is leaving an enclosed space; andare is heading somewhere in general, so the two are not competitors.

Where learners slip

The first plural is usciamo, with the stem intact. Uscite is both the voi present and the feminine plural participle, so read the sentence again. Because the auxiliary is essere, a woman says sono uscita and a group of women dicevano di essere uscite.

Questions learners ask

Is it esce or uscisce?

Esce, and the third plural is escono. The -isc- infix belongs to -ire verbs of the second type such as capire (capisce) and preferire (preferisce); uscire is not one of them.

Does uscire take essere or avere?

Essere: sono uscito, siamo usciti. The participle agrees with the subject, so the feminine is sono uscita.

What does uscire con someone mean?

To date them or to go out with them: escono insieme da un mese (they have been going out for a month). Without con it is simply leaving: esco con gli amici (I'm going out with friends).

How do I say "I get out of the car"?

Scendo dalla macchina. Uscire describes leaving an enclosed space, while scendere describes stepping down out of something or getting off a train.
